EOP 9 High Fission Products in Main Coolant Revision ? 5/1/63
A. Symptoms
First indications of the presence of fission products in the primary coolant will no doubt be
detected in samples taken from the letdown flow. These samples are taken daily.
C. Follow-Up Action
- 1. Increase the purification flow in order to remove as much of the fission products from
the primary system and into the purification system as possible without interfering with
the operation.
- a. Increase letdown flow to the maximum allowable (45 gpm with PS temperature above 350F).
- b. Place a second demineralizer and the other effluent filter into service.
- 2. Vent the pressurizer through WL-1V into the letdown system for 15 minutes every eight
hours. This will remove the trapped fission gases into the buffer seal surge tank.
- 3. Vent the buffer seal surge tank to the atmosphere as follows to dispose of the
fission gases.
- a. Sample the surge tank according to SOP #3153 through valve WL-86V to determine the
activity present.
- b. Vent the surge tank to the waste collection manifold through valve WL-33V, while following
the activity on Channel #11 of the Radiation Monitoring System. Restrict valving to hold the
discharge concentration below the alarm point of 3x10^-5 uc/cm%3.
- c. When the concentration in the buffer seal surge tank reaches the point where it is
too high to be discharged under the conditions of 3-b, the following procedure should be
observed:
- (1) Open the ventilation supply valve RS-40V to the purge position.
- (2) Place the emergency filters into use with the normal filters by opening valve RS-4V.
- (3) Start the second ventilation exhaust fan.
- (4) Vent the surge tank as in step 3-b, while observing the activity on Channel #9.
Restrict the valving to hold the concentration after dilution to below 2.4 x 10^-7 uc/cm^3
as indicated on the stack monitor.
- 4. Venting to the atmosphere will be under the direction of the Health Physics group.
They will be responsible to assure proper dispersion from the mast and for ascertaining
that adequate control zones have been established about the ship when discharging gases
while in confined waters.
- 5. Close check on the decontamination factors for the operating demineralizers must be
made to assure that adequate service is being provided. Also, the maintenance group must
be alerted to the possibility of a need for an accelerated program of demineralizer recharging.
