Equipment Failure Procedure
CA-SSA-85 Control & Ship's Service Air 10/22/62
A. One CA Compressor (Or Its Related Equipment) Becomes Inoperative
- 1. When the operating unit fails, observe that the standby unit on "Auto" starts and
maintains the airpressure. Switch the operating unit to the "HAND" position.
- 2. Close the isolation valves surrounding the inoperative compressor and tag out the valves
and controls.
- 3. Monitor the duty cycle and temperatures on the operating unit.
- 4. Repair and return the shutdown unit to normal status.
- 5. Should the operating or second compressor fail, shutdown the reactor, open valve NI-8V
on the emergency tie line to the SSA system.
- 6. Should the operating unit run loaded continuously at 80 psig or less, shutdown the
reactor, open the emergency tie (NI-8V).
B. One CA Filter Becomes Inoperative
- 1. Isolate faulty unit and tag out the valves.
- 2. Monitor pressure on 40 psig discharge line.
- 3. Repair and restore faulty unit to normal status.
- 4. If the second or operating unit becomes defective, shutdown reactor and start DK
system. Open valve NI-8V on the emergency tie to the SSA.
C. One CA After-Cooler Becomes Inoperative.
- 1. Switch to the standby unit. Isolate the unit and tag out the valves.
- 2. Monitor operation of operating after-cooler particularly in relation to the CW
outlet temperature.
- 3. Repair the defective cooler and return it to service.
- 4. Should the operating after-cooler go out, shutdown the reactor, open valve NI-8V
on the emergency tie to the SSA.
D. Loss Of One CA 40 psig Or 30 psig Air Supply Regulator
- 1. Isolate the defective regulator and tag out the valves.
- 2. Monitor the pressure on the discharge line of the operating regulator.
- 3. Repair the defective regulator and return it to service.
- 4. Should the second 40 psig regulator fail, open the valve on the bypass line and
regulate the pressure manually as close as possible to 40 psig by NI-51V.
- 5. Should the second 30 psig regulator fail, shutdown the reactor and control the 30 psig
air by using the manual bypass valve NI-60V.
E. Loss Of One SS Compressor
- 1. When operating unit fails observe that the standby unit on "Auto" starts and maintains
the air pressure. Switch the operating unit to the "Hand" position.
- 2. Close the isolation valves surrounding the inoperative compressor and tag the valves
and controls.
- 3. Start the ADG's and load them lightly.
- 4. Repair the unit and return it to normal status.
- 5. If the second SSA unit becomes inoperable when the main propulsion plant is not being
operated, continue to operate with the ADG's loaded lightly, but shutdown the Beslers, if
operating or, do not start them.
- 6. If the second SSA unit becomes inoperable while the main propulsion turbine is being
operated, transfer steam dump to CA supply if in service.
F. Loss of SSA After-Cooler
- 1. Shutdown SSA compressor. Start the ADG's and load them lightly. Shutdown the Beslers,
if operating, or, od not start them. Continue to operate reactor plant.
- 2. Isolate the compressor and after-cooler and tag out the valves and controls.
- 3. Monitor operation of ADG's.
- 4. Repair the cooler and return it to normal status.
G. Loss Of One Diesel Start Air Tank
- 1. Start the ADG's and load them lightly. Continue normal reactor plant operation.
- 2. Isolate the inoperative air tank and tag out the valves.
- 3. Monitor the operation of the ADG's.
- 4. Repair tank and restore it to service.
- 5. If the second air tank fails, continue to operate ADG's with light load.
- 6. If two air tanks are inoperative and the ADG's have not been started, or, or not
operating, start he EDG and shutdown the reactor.
