When I was young, my father worked at Bendix Avionics making test panels for aircraft automatic pilot systems. He would show me kits like the neon chaser lights (like this reproduction on YouTube or Hackaday). I've retained an interest and always have multiple projects going in the background. I have used open source tools such as KiCad on my personal projects. Design vs. Restoration I have restored or helped conserve many significant artifacts. MK-75 Targeting Computer development system transferred to museum. Sony AV-3600 Solid State Videocorder restored to operation. AMPEX QUAD AVR-2, the first Ampex quad to feature a digital Time Base Corrector. Restored to full broadcast quality operation. I also help with others' personal projects, like converting dash lighting from green to to blue LEDs. Sometimes it's as simple as soldering a sprung connector shell. Sometimes it's carefully desoldering parts from instruments on their way to the landfill. Sometimes it's replacing a switch that's worn out from a decade of collecting responses. |
